Actuarial
Are you Considering a Career as an Actuary?
If so, American Family Insurance may be the place for you! Our actuaries play a key role in the operations of our company, through their ability to solve problems, analyze data and communicate effectively.
What Exactly is an Actuary?
You may not be familiar with the term "Actuary" (there are only about 20,000 actuaries total in all of North America!) but their expertise is very important to anyone who owns insurance policies.
The work of actuaries is essential to the insurance industry. Simply stated, they identify how much to charge policyholders for insurance premiums by calculating the costs of accepting risk (in other words, how much an insurance company can anticipate paying in claims). Actuaries also assist in the design of new insurance products and help ensure our company is financially stable and solvent.
If you’re considering a career as an actuary, you’ll need a strong knowledge of math calculus and statistics as well as strong computer, analytical and problem-solving skills. You’ll also need an undergraduate degree in Actuarial Science, Math or a related degree like Risk Management, Statistics or Computer Science. Actuaries also complete a series of exams administered by the Casualty Actuarial Society or the Society of Actuaries during their careers.
Incidentally, the Jobs Rated Almanac has consistently rated the actuarial profession as one of the best jobs in the United States!

Pete, Claims
Claims Job Descriptions
An effective claim professional needs to be many things: detail oriented, a strong communicator, a good listener, tactful and even a bit of a diplomat at times. It's a demanding job, but also rewarding because it gets at the heart of what insurance is all about being there for people in a time of need. Here is an overview of the various types of claim positions at American Family:
Claim Customer Care Center
Claim representatives in the Claim Customer Care Centers (CCCC) will provide efficient and professional customer-centric interaction. The claims handled in the CCCC will be those that can be closed with minimal or no follow-up needed. Positions in the CCCC are:
- Associate Claim Representative
- Claim Representative
- Senior Claim Representative
Claim professionals in the CCCC specialize in one of two lines of insurance:
- Property - This type of insurance provides financial protection for the loss of or damage to real and personal property.
- Auto - This type of insurance provides financial protection for property damage to a vehicle under the "collision insurance" and "comprehensive insurance" sections of a policy.
Claim Office & Field Positions
Many of our claims positions are based in an office setting. Others are in the field, interacting face-to-face with our customers. Whether you work in an office or in the field, you’ll specialize in one of several lines of insurance:
- Property - This type of insurance provides financial protection for the loss of or damage to real and personal property.
- Physical Damage - This type of insurance provides financial protection for property damage to a vehicle under the "collision insurance" and "comprehensive insurance" sections of a policy.
- Casualty - This type of insurance provides financial protection for losses caused by injury to others or damage to the property of others.
- Business, Farm & Ranch – This type of insurance provides financial protection that might occur in association with the operation of a business, farm or ranch.
- Worker’s Compensation – This type of coverage provides financial protection to employees who are injured at their place of employment.
Many of our claim professionals begin their careers at the associate level by learning investigation and settlement techniques and how to appropriately record and document information critical to the claim. They also learn to analyze and estimate losses and gain an understanding of corporate procedures and philosophies.
Providing good customer service and demonstrating positive performance have their rewards - including potential for growth and advancement. If you have big plans for your future, there are several positions you may advance to at American Family.
Positions in operations outside of the Claim Customer Care Centers are:
Auto/Property/Commercial/Workers Compensation
- Associate Adjuster
- Claim Adjuster
- Senior Claim Adjuster
We should also note that if your background meets the knowledge and skill requirements for a position requiring more experience, you may be selected for one of those positions without starting out at the entry level.

Claims
American Family Insurance's Excel Training Program is a comprehensive course that combines multimedia training tools with "hands on" classroom exercises. The program is designed to be flexible enough to address the training needs of new employees with no prior claims experience as well as those who bring a wealth of claims-handling knowledge.
Program Basics
ExcelWeb
This two-week program takes place in the local office. The manager, employee and the Claim Education staff will facilitate the activities via the Web for this period. The topics covered will focus on Customer Service, Phone Skills, Introductory PC, Mainframe training, Introductory Policy and Corporate Claim Philosophy and Guidelines. Quizzes and practice exercises help the trainee assess his or her progress. This education provides an introduction to the basics of claims handling.
Excel Development
The second phase of education begins at week three of employment at our National Headquarters in Madison, WI. The information learned during ExcelWeb will be applied in a controlled classroom setting. Casualty, Property and Physical Damage Reps with prior estimating experience will remain in Madison for two weeks during this module. PDR's without prior experience will remain in Madison an additional week.

Molly, Sales
Excel Application
Since each employee enters and completes the program with a different level of experience, the length of the Application Module will vary by individual and takes place at the local office. The Application Module begins with an assessment of the information learned during the Development Module. The assessment provides valuable information to the employee and manager as to what areas have been mastered and what areas need to be further reviewed. During the Application Module, on-the-job experience will be blended with knowledge regarding state-specific and local office-specific topics.
Medical Training Track (Casualty Reps Only)
Casualty Reps are required to complete the medical training track just prior to handling bodily injury or medical expense claims. The timing of this training varies by office but is typically three to six months after completion of Excel. The medical training track consists of Diagnosis Whiplash Module and training on the Colossus system. The medical training track is one week in length and takes place at the National Headquarters in Madison, WI.
Once you complete the classroom training, you continue to receive support and instruction from claim professionals at your office location. This is where you will be introduced to the day-to-day environment of an American Family Claim Office. You won't be left on your own - but will instead be able to take advantage of constant interaction with other American Family claims experts as you learn all the "ins and outs" of handling claims in a real-world setting.

The employees and management of American Family Insurance are HR’s primary customers, and we strive to provide them with world-class programs and services that enable them to focus on serving our agents and policyholders.
How do we do that? Well, for starters, we place a strong emphasis on technology – delivering HR service through a state-of-the-art online tool we call People Place. With this tool, our employees can access personalized information about their pay, their benefits, their time off and our company policies. We’ve even automated our new employee orientation program, so your first day with us can be spent with your new co-workers – not with HR.
Our Human Resources division is centralized at our National Headquarters in Madison, but we have HR employees in our regional offices as well. Our structure is designed to support our goal of providing strategic support for our client divisions, with business partners who work directly with divisional leadership and "centers of expertise" built around HR disciplines such as staffing, compensation, benefits and organization effectiveness.

Todd,

Our HR "self service" operations also include a call center known as Ask HR, because that’s exactly what it lets our employees do (and they receive prompt, knowledgeable answers). It’s all part of our HR Promise of "no barriers" – no barriers to the information and tools our employees need to be their best and do their best.

With motivation, hard work and a commitment to success, your agency can expand and grow, providing a great income for you and your family.
As an agent, you are paid based on new policies and renewals of existing policies. This renewal income reflects American Family Insurance's commitment to outstanding claims service, which often results in additional agency business through referrals.
You can also increase your sales and income by offering your customers additional insurance products - an advantage of the American Family Insurance multi-line offerings.
In addition, we offer a generous finance plan, subject to qualification, which provides an advance on future commission while you're getting started.

Owning Your Own Business
As owner and manager of your own agency, you are responsible for setting and achieving your agency's sales and growth targets. But you won't have to do it alone. You'll have the ability to hire your own staff, and you'll also work in partnership with your district manager to meet strategic business goals you set. You'll also have the support of more than 8,000 corporate employees and the backing of a company with more than $13 billion in assets!
One of the most critical factors in your success is hiring the proper staff, including:
Agency Sales
Agency sales personnel assist you with setting appointments, completing and filing applications, and supporting sales through lead generation and follow-up.
Agency Support
Agency support personnel help maintain customer records and assist current and potential policy holders with questions and concerns.

Getting Started
The agent selection process is designed to help you evaluate the agency opportunity and to help American Family Insurance assess your knowledge, skills and abilities.
The American Family Insurance selection process can be challenging. But it is designed to allow you to explore this career opportunity without terminating your current employment - making it low-risk for you. If at any time during the process you feel this opportunity is not for you, you may simply withdraw from the process without any obligations.
Here is a summary of what you may encounter during the agent selection process:
- You'll apply by contacting a local District Manager.
- You'll complete and submit the online Agency application, motor vehicle report (MVR) authorization and credit bureau report (CBR).
- You are contacted by a District Manger or recruiter and begin a series of meetings and interviews. During this time you learn more about what's involved in a career as an American Family Insurance agent.
- You may be asked to practice prospecting (lead generation). This allows you and the district manager to evaluate your prospecting skills.
- You are introduced to basic insurance training materials and asked to study material regarding American Family Insurance's products.
- You and the District Manager discuss items such as production goals, the American Family Insurance Agreement, estimated income and business expenses.
- You and the District Manager discuss your eligibility for the Agent Finance Plan.
- You begin preparation for your state insurance licensing exam and security license exams. This step requires a commitment of time on your behalf as well as incurring a small expense for the licensing exam fees.
When you have successfully completed these steps, you then are appointed as an American Family Insurance agent!
Our goal is to identify and appoint outstanding individuals to our agency opportunities. To accomplish this, the selection process may take some time and involve some expense. But keep in mind that you are not simply applying for a job; an American Family Insurance agency is an opportunity to own your own business with the backing of a stable, growing and respected company. We hope you'll consider the challenge!

I was conducting a personal insurance review of an account with a client I didn’t know very well. She looked up at me and said, “Wow, you must really love your job." That’s when I realized that the passion I feel about insurance and our company is evident to my clients. It’s either genuine or it’s not there.
Words of Wisdom
What are you waiting for? American Family Insurance has a flawless reputation and if you can provide exceptional customer service, it’s a winning ticket. The first years are lean, but then you start getting referrals and discover very few people offer any customer service let alone service that exceed expectations. The company listens to their agents and responds. There are also numerous advancement opportunities.

My daughters were six months and six years old when I became an agent. I was looking for a career which afforded me flexibility. I wanted to attend their school parties. As they grew up, I have been able to attend their sports matches. I’m a very self-directed person and I never liked always being told what to do – this is the perfect opportunity because the harder you work, the luckier you get.

One of my greatest successes was obtaining my series 6 and 63 licenses. Professional Success
I have worked hard to build my agency. This is a job that will always reward you for your efforts. My agency is in a small town and I was not originally from this area. So I had to win the trust of the community and my customers. Many of my customers came to me from referrals of my existing customers which reassures me that they trust me and my agency staff enough to send us their friends.
What do you contribute to your agency’s great success?
I treat every customer with respect, no matter how many policies they have with me. And I have this expectation of my staff as well. I am available to meet with my current and potential customers and listen to their needs. They put trust in me and because of this I strive to find the best solution to their problem. In today’s world of computers and 1-800 numbers, my agency differentiates itself because my clients know there is a local based person they can call that will be there for them.
Best Career Aspects
I had always worked in the corporate environment as part of a team striving to reach the company’s goals. As an agent, I can formulate my own business plan, set goals and work towards achieving those goals. If my efforts are not working, I can regroup and try something different. I am in charge of my success!

Favorite Agency Memory
One of my favorite memories was on a recent life insurance appointment. I started my agency at 26 and not many people actually asked for my advice. After an appointment with a husband and wife, they asked me what I thought because they trusted me to do what was right for them. That experience made me feel great because I knew I was building their trust and was helping them out with their needs and looking out for their best interests.
Best Career Aspects
I enjoy the people that I work with on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. I was working in a small cubical and not having much personal interaction except by e-mail. Now my clients come in and talk with me face-to- face about what's going on in their lives! I also enjoy the freedom that my agency allows me to have. I do not punch a clock so there is a lot of autonomy if you are doing what needs to be done to run a profitable and successful agency.
Best Career Aspects

Professional Success
The flexibility of running an agency has allowed me the time to get involved in some really rewarding community projects. Probably the one closest to my heart would be an organization that is dedicated to helping the working poor in my community. They provide the most basic of needs; food, shelter and clothing to those people that make too much money to qualify for federal aid but not enough to actually meet the basic necessities of life. I spent so many years on the board of directors that finally the director had to point out that my time spent had exceeded their bylaws by 4 or 5 years.
Agency Success
My agency has been successful because we have treated everyone exactly the way we would like to be treated. Every client is given the respect that we give our next door neighbors and good friends.

Memorable Moment
Being on stage and recognized by my peers at the All American in San Diego for being one of the Company’s Top Ten Agents, stands out as one of my most memorable moments. I received a Rolex watch for that achievement. I wear that watch everyday to remind me to work hard, focus on my goals and to remember the feeling of that great achievement.
Best Career Aspect
I most enjoy the flexibility that comes with the job. The responsibility ultimately lies with you the agent and you have to wear all of the hats that come with owning your own business. Eventually you can focus on the items that are your true strengths, essentially creating your own job description.
Words of Wisdom
Although there are many challenges an agent faces day to day. The company’s goal is for you to succeed. They provide you the tools to build your own business, but the motivation and desire must come from within. I try to remember that it is a marathon and not a race. I also try to remember to concentrate on triumph instead of disaster.

Memorable Moment
I had a client that lost a small child to a rare blood disease. The client called me to thank me for recommending that he buy a $50,000 life policy a couple years earlier on his child. At the time he felt that no child needed that much. But after a year of travel and motel rooms and miscellaneous expenses around his child’s death, the $50,000 was a financial blessing to the family. It truly touched my heart that he would take the time to thank me.
Agency Success
My agency has been successful because I have put others needs in front of my own, maintained an honest practice and fulfilled all promises. I have always had the mentality that success is a journey not a destination, so I am trying to achieve success on a daily basis.
Career Choice
I choose American Family Insurance because they have consistently been very strong within the insurance industry, and they offered a great financial plan to help me get my agency started. Internships
Are you a student looking for some valuable "real world" experience beyond the classroom? If so, you’ll definitely want to check out internship opportunities here at American Family. We understand the value of a successful internship — for you, for our organization, and for the communities we serve — and we’re dedicated to providing this opportunity for today’s college student.
There are three key ingredients to any successful internship, all equally important. First, you need to bring in the best students — because it all starts with you and your commitment to succeed! Then you need to provide those students with meaningful and challenging tasks, so they can learn and grow in a "real" work environment. And finally, you must provide them with strong, supportive mentors to help foster their learning experience.
We provide our interns with feedback on their contributions to American Family and we give them an opportunity to give us feedback on their experience as well. We use that input to continuously improve our program for future interns.
And that’s not all ... what would an internship be without a little fun? We also add some fun social and networking opportunities to round out the experience!

Amy,
Strategic Research
Sound interesting? Here are a few ways to take action:
- All of our internship positions will be posted on the Search Jobs & Apply section of our Web site. It pays to visit this area often to check for internship positions as they become available.
- More information specific to Actuarial internships and Information Services (I/S) internships can be found by visiting our comprehensive "Career Centers" for those two fields.
- When you find one that interests you, simply apply directly to that opportunity. Your resumé will then be routed directly to the recruiter filling the position.
- If there are no current openings, you may want to submit your resumé into our database for future consideration. Visit Search Jobs & Apply – if you don’t have a resumé, click "resumé Builder;" if you do, click “Build Your Profile.”
- Another option would be to check out our Recruiting Events Schedule to see if we’ll be at your campus soon. We would love to have the opportunity to talk to you in person and discuss in greater detail the many internship possibilities throughout American Family.
Best of luck, and we hope to see you sometime in the future!
