About us

• American Family Insurance began on Oct. 3, 1927, when insurance salesman Herman Wittwer opened the doors of Farmers Mutual Insurance Company in Madison, Wis. At the time, the company’s only product was auto insurance and its target market was farmers. Wittwer believed farmers presented lower risks than city drivers because they drove less often and not at all in the winter.

  Over the years, Farmers Mutual expanded its market and product line to meet the changing needs of its customers. In 1963, Farmers Mutual changed its name to American Family Mutual Insurance Company to reflect its broader customer base.

  Today, American Family Insurance agents offer auto, home, life & annuities1, health, business and farm & ranch insurance. Still based in Madison, the company currently operates in 19 states.

Our Agents & Employees

• American Family Insurance contracts with roughly 4,000 independent contractor exclusive agents and employs more than 8,400 people in a variety of professional areas, including: actuarial, brokerage, claims, education, financial services, government affairs, human resources, information services, investments, legal, marketing, office administration, product design, public relations and underwriting.

• American Family’s National Headquarters is located at 6000 American Parkway, Madison, WI 53783-0001. The company also maintains five regional facilities (Columbus, Ohio; Denver, Colo.; Eden Prairie, Minn.; Madison; and St. Joseph, Mo.) as well as numerous claim offices.

Our Community Involvement

• American Family Insurance has a long tradition of community sponsorships and involvement, contributing to organizations that improve the quality of life for those in need, particularly children. In 2007, the company made charitable contributions of more than $2.5 million and continued its $15 million support for the construction of a new children’s hospital in Madison, Wis. American Family Insurance, together with employees and agents, also pledged more than $1 million to their local United Way chapters.

  This strong sense of community extends beyond financial contributions. Our agents and employees volunteer countless hours outside the workplace. They participate in food drives and fund-raising events for diabetes and cancer research. They donate blood to the Red Cross, coach youth sports teams and play an active role in a variety of school, church and community activities.
