Human Resources (HR) is charged with attracting, developing and helping to retain the kind of talented, skilled people who are critical to achieving our business objectives. The employees and management of American Family Insurance are HR's primary customers, and we strive to provide them with world-class programs and services that enable them to focus on serving our agents and policyholders.

How do we do that? Well, for starters, we place a strong emphasis on technology - delivering HR service through a state-of-the-art online tool we call People Place. With this tool, our employees can access personalized information about their pay, their benefits, their time off and our company policies. We've even automated our new employee orientation program, so your first day with us can be spent with your new co-workers - not with HR.

Our Human Resources division is centralized at our National Headquarters in Madison, but we have HR employees in our regional offices as well. Our structure is designed to support our goal of providing strategic support for our client divisions, with business partners who work directly with divisional leadership and "centers of expertise" built around HR disciplines such as staffing, compensation, benefits and organization effectiveness.

Our HR "self service" operations also include a call center known as Ask HR, because that's exactly what it lets our employees do (and they receive prompt, knowledgeable answers). It's all part of our HR Promise of "no barriers" - no barriers to the information and tools our employees need to be their best and do their best.

Within HR there are a wide variety of traditional and not-so-traditional jobs, including:

  • Staffing Specialist - Work with external applicants, internal employees and hiring managers to match the right people with the right jobs.
  • HR Business Partner - Work directly with divisional leadership to collaboratively develop business strategies that address a wide variety of people issues.
  • Business Systems Analyst - Within the HR Technology & Data group, work directly with the data systems that power our HR operations.
  • Strategic Compensation Consultant - Work with client divisions to research, develop and implement job pricing strategies that meet the needs of the division and our company.
  • Organization Effectiveness Specialist - Serve as an internal consultant for client divisions, providing them with processes and tools to help them achieve their business goals.
  • HR Service Experience Specialist - Work collaboratively with all areas of HR to design, develop and implement self-service content and tools that support our Human Resources "brand."

As you can see, our Human Resources division is a leader in blending "high tech" systems with a "high touch" approach to delivering service and solutions. It's a fast-paced but fun environment that provides plenty of opportunities for HR professionals to grow and shine.
