Underwriters determine the correct coverage and cost of a policy by gathering information and evaluating the degree of risk involved. Because they're accountable for risk selection, underwriters play a key role in the profitability of the entire company.

Underwriters may underwrite individual health care and life insurance policies or policies for auto, home, business, farm, etc. They may divide their time between office work and field assignments, working closely with agents and customers.
