  11. While every gesture counts, we know that so too does every dollar. As our customers continue to be impacted by the changes and challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, American Family continues to support them at every step. That unwavering commitment to our customers spurred our decision to issue a second round of auto premium relief.

We chose to provide the second round of auto premium relief as a credit, rather than as a payment, because it allows customers to benefit immediately from these savings, rather than waiting up to 12 months for their policy to renew.

  12. American Family is and will continue to be financially strong. Our financial strength has been re-affirmed by rating agencies Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s (S&P) and A.M. Best.
  13. You — our customers — are what matter most to us. Auto Insurance Premium Relief Payment FAQs

  1. It is a one-time return of premium directly to American Family Insurance personal auto customers because they are driving less and filing fewer claims during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  2. We are doing this because it is the right thing to do for our customers. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, customers are staying at home to care for themselves and their loved ones, driving less and filing fewer claims. Because of these factors, we are returning premium to them. Our customers are truly at the center of everything we do.
  3. The Premium Relief Payment is a one-time payment of $50.00 per vehicle to eligible customers.
  4. Customers who had a private passenger automobile policy in force as of March 11, 2020, the date the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, will receive a payment. Classic and Advance policies are both eligible.
  5. We know there’s been a significant reduction in miles driven and claims filed for personal vehicles since the pandemic began limiting people’s activity. We are not seeing similar claim trends in our other lines of insurance, such as homeowners where filed claims are increasing, likely from people staying home more, resulting in more accidents.
  6. Because so many people are experiencing financial hardship now, we are working to get these payments issued as quickly as possible. Please check the status of your relief payment, contact your American Family agent.
  7. The Premium Relief Payment will automatically be sent to all eligible customers after receipt of regulatory approval from their state. No application is required.

  8. The amount is built on our estimated lower auto claim costs with reduced driving by our customers.
  9. Because you are a customer who had a personal auto policy with American Family as of March 11, 2020, the date the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Because our customers are driving less and having fewer claims, we are returning premium to you.
  10. It will be a paper check that is issued and mailed to the address of the named insured on the policy.
  11. Any Family Car schedule vehicles, including Medium/Heavy trucks, are eligible. Both owned and leased vehicles in this schedule qualify.

Vehicles that are not eligible are: Cycles, Campers, Personal Trailers, Motor Homes, or Specialty Vehicles (golf carts, mini-trucks, personal mobility device, snowmobile, tractors/farm machinery). Non-owners’ policies, such as SR22s, are not eligible.

  12. No. Because this is based on a decrease in claims due to the majority of customers currently driving less, the funds are not connected to rates and will not result in a rate increase.
  13. No, it would not be considered a taxable event for the customer, as long as the amount the customer receives does not exceed the amount the customer has paid in premium during the calendar year (not the 6-month policy term).
  14. We are not experiencing reduced mileage driven for commercial auto policies. In fact, we anticipate an increase in commercial auto use for food and service deliveries, maintaining or even increasing exposure. While the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced personal usage of vehicles, essential businesses need to maintain stock and supply so deliveries continue to occur at a reasonably equivalent pace as pre-COVID-19.

*The Auto Premium Relief Credit is based on personal auto policies in force July 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020 and is subject to regulatory approval in each state.
