What is the most valuable takeaway from your internship?
There were a lot of takeaways, but I would say the biggest was probably adapting to a fast-paced environment. For my articles, there were tight deadlines to be met, as well as interviewing the subject and actually writing the story. So working under a tight deadline – while also bringing creativity into the articles – was a big takeaway for me. I also came in with minimal knowledge about the insurance industry in general. I left my internship know much more about it.
Where are you employed now and what do you do there?
I was lucky enough to be offered a full-time position at American Family right out of my internship. It was really nice going through my last college semester knowing I not only had a job lined up, but a job I was genuinely excited for. I’m now a Corporate Communications Writer, so I still do a lot of content writing for employees and agents which is a blast. It allows me to be creative and meet a lot of different people. Each article presents a different opportunity to create something unique, and it is fun for me to figure out what exactly that is. We’ve also started broadening our horizons to include infographics, videos, podcasts and other means of communication. My role has also expanded, and I focus on supporting certain areas across the company for their communications needs.
